Sr. Claire visited the school on March 13th and she both affirmed and complimented the work done in the Alive-O Programme
Congratulations to the pupils of 5th and 6th classes who received the gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation in glorious sun shine on the 28th March. The children of 2nd class who received their First Penance on March 6th are now looking forward to their Communion on Saturday 19th May at 11am. Lets hope the sun will shine for all of you too. The Parents Council will be kindly organising tea in the hall for the communicants and their families etc after the First Communion ceremony, see Parents Council letter for more details.
Wedding Bells
We would like to send warm wishes to Ms Susan O’Connell on the occasion of her upcoming wedding to Mr Darren O’Sullivan. We wish them both every joy and happiness for their future life together.
School Garden
Work continues in the school fruit and vegetable garden. We would like to thank the parents who have volunteered their time to help the pupils of 3rd & 4th classes to learn more about composting, planting and the care of plants. This work compliments the “living things” strand of our science curriculum.
Healthy Lunches
Learning about, growing and tasting our own fruit and vegetables will help to develop healthy eating habits for the future. I would remind you of our healthy eating policy. Encourage your child to bring a healthy lunch to school.
Clean Coast Awareness Day
On Friday 27th April we had a visit from Aidan Gray of An Taisce. Firstly Aidan spoke to classes 1st- 6th about the benefits and responsibilities of living near the coast. He then showed us a variety of sea shells and told us about the creatures that lived in them. Afterwards pupils from 3rd to 6th walked to Ardnahinch beach for a beach clean up and some fun activities.
Sciath na Scol
The boys in classes 3rd to 6th have now played and won two of their three matches in Roinn H. Weather permitting the next match will be played on Thursday against Little Island. We wish the boys well.
Drumming
We have now had two of our five drumming sessions with Eamon Cagney. Children are working on their auditory memory and call and response rhythms. The five sessions are €10.00 per child. This can be paid to the office before Friday 11th May.
Primary Games
We wish Eoghan O’Sullivan – Hurling; Cormac Aherne – Football and Katie Scannell – Football, well as they go forward for the selection process for the Primary Games and hopefully we will see them at half time for some of the Championship matches.
Friends Stop
A new strategy has been put in place to help children on the yard. If a child is feeling lost eg. can’t locate friends on return to yard from bathroom or lacks the confidence to join a group, the child sits on the bench at the “Friends Stop”. This firstly encourages the child to be pro active about their situation and ask for help. Secondly it alerts adults and other children that their help and intervention is needed. It is hoped that this strategy will further promote the caring attitude in the school. I would appreciate it if you would discuss the “Friends Stop” with your child so it can be used to its full effect.
Cookery School Days
Pupils for 5th & 6th had a very educational and busy day at the cookery school on March 28th. The gardening group returned with lots of information and a selection of plants. The cooking group were extremely busy making an array of dishes, homemade burgers, homemade buns and ketchup, sponge and upside down cakes just to mention a few. The groups will be reversed for their return visit on Wednesday 23rd May.
Damage to school grounds
I would like to make you aware that some damage has been done to the school grounds. Should you observe unauthorised persons on the school grounds could you bring it to the attention of myself or a member of the board of management.
Voluntary Contributions for School
The board would like to acknowledge the contributions made by families in single and multiple instalments. The board would also appreciate any further contributions even at this late stage.
Induction Day
We are delighted to be welcoming twelve Junior Infants 2012-2013 to Holy Family N.S. on Monday 28th of May. Our new entrants will have an opportunity to meet their class teacher and parents will get to familiarise themselves a little with the staff and school building.
Cork City Sports
This year Cork City Sports will take place on May 18th. Further details later.
Saving Stamps
Saving stamps continue to be sold in the office on Wednesday and we encourage children to develop the habit of saving.
