October Teaghlaigh Naofa Times
Board of Management of Holy Family N.S.
The Board would like to thank all those members of the school community who contributed to the development of the school during the past academic year, teachers, parents, Parent Association and the people of Shanagarry. Our school is a reflection of your interest in the education of our young people.
The following policies have been ratified by the Board and are available to parents in the school office. Learning Support, Swimming, Anti-Bullying, Administration of Medicines and Intimate Care
The Board of Management wish to express its thanks to those families who have paid a voluntary contribution. The Board appreciates your active support of the school especially in this era of cut backs. The payment card system will operate this year and parents may find this useful to spread monthly payment across the school year
Sciath na Scol
The first month back in school has been a busy one. Boys and girls from 3rd – 6th class attended a Gaelic Football Blitz in Cobh to decide the first part of the Sciath na Scol competition. Our boys put up a brave performance against Padre Pio, Gael Scoil Uí Drisceoil and Walterstown. Our girls also played three matches and we are waiting for confirmation of a date for our next match. Thanks to Martin O Sullivan who trained the boys coming up to the blitz.
Conna Cross Country Run
Well done to all those who ran to compete or to participate in Conna on Friday 28th September. We had an extremely high level of participation. All children were pleased with their performance from those who received medals (Rebecca Tallon and Tom Morrison) to those who completed the course for the first time. A word of thanks to those who were carrying injuries yet still travelled to support their classmates.
An active reader
The skill of reading like any sport is a learned skill. Those who practise/train regularly make the most progress. I would earnestly ask you to encourage your child to read at home. Children in the senior classes should be encouraged to question as they read and this will help you know how well your child is following the story line eg. Question the development of the plot. Question why/how characters make their choices. In a world where children are bombarded with all sorts of information it is vital for them to be able to stop, take stock of the situation and question it.
School Garden
Well done to all who took part in the gardening competition in May. We secured third place in a field of very keen gardeners. The prize money of 250 euro will be invested in the garden for the coming school year. Thanks to all who made this a reality.
Swimming
The eight week programme of lessons has commenced. There are fewer children attending swimming lessons this year than in previous years. As this is in part due to costs involved the Board of Management have ratified a change in school policy and school swimming lessons will take place every second year. Those who wish to continue private lessons will be placed in a swimming group which reflects their ability when they attend swimming lessons with school. Swimming is part of our P.E. Curriculum as set out by the Department of Education and is a form of healthy exercise for all.

First Holy Communion
Children in second class have begun preparation for their Holy Communion on May 11th. This preparation will continue as the children celebrate a series of ‘Do this in memory of Me’ Masses over the coming months.
Staying Healthy and Well
All children from now on should bring a warm coat and hat to school. Our school yard is extremely exposed on windy days and it is important for children to be well wrapped up if we are to take full advantage of any dry days that come our way. Boys and girls who wish to play on the pitch should from now on bring an old pair of tracksuit ends to pull up over their school trousers. Please ensure that your child has a healthy lunch and a pair of indoor shoes
